Hidden Treasures in L.A.
Plenty of people in this city moan and groan about life in LA. Grit, crime, gridlock – a general lack of mass transportation, a haven for the self involved… Others will explain in plenty of detail. But you know what? This city has an amazing capacity to throw a spectacular twist your way when you least expect it. Take for example this Shepard Fairey mural. It’s called Mujer Fatal, and do you know where I found it? Lincoln Blvd. Dirty, gritty, oft-lamented and always gridlocked Lincoln Boulevard! A Shepard Fairey original mural – world class art installation and it is lurking in the palms of Marina Del Rey. I haven’t actually verified it was Fairey’s hand at work, but if this is the doing of an impersonator, isn’t that almost cooler given Fairey’s approach to art and property? Someone rips off the Andre the Giant rip-off artist? Fucking rad.
I love print art – I’m a sucker for iconic propaganda
Fairey talks about phenomenalism here, and as I read it, I had to admit: Yup. You got your reaction. You win. And so did I, because this amazing mural gave me a nice little spark of appreciation for L.A. today.
The beauty of all good things, and Shephard’s art in particular, is that you never know where they’re gonna pop up. So keep your eyes wide open.
